Lola Bennett is a 2023 Bath Spa University graduate with a first class degree in Creative Arts Practice, as well as the 2023/2024 Spike Island Graduate Resident Fellowship recipient. Bennett is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice weaves ceramics and textiles to explore themes of nostalgia, memory, vulnerability, and the complexities of domestic & young adult life, in particular isolation. Drawing from her background in heritage-based crafts like quilting and needlepoint, Bennett’s work reflects on the narratives embedded in traditional female labor and challenges perceptions of craft and art.
Central to Bennett’s practice is a focus on the narratives held by objects and the intimacy of handmade processes. Her ceramic and textile-based pieces act as both functional objects and storytelling vessels, adorned with whimsical motifs and evocative imagery inspired by Americana, early 2000s tattoo culture, rural settings and naively kitsch aesthetics. These elements create a dialogue between comfort and discomfort, inviting viewers to reflect on the dualities of connection and isolation, domesticity and individuality, and ritual and routine.
Through a process-driven approach, Bennett employs repetitive and meditative methods, embracing imperfections to highlight the act of making itself as integral to the work. Her work often takes the form of large-scale “collection installations,” such as sculptural tablescapes and reinterpreted everyday objects, designed to evoke feelings of familiarity and nostalgia, in juxtaposition to the isolation & over consumption crisis of modern life.Grounded in her rural American upbringing and apprenticeships in ceramics, textiles, and goldsmithing, Bennett’s practice is a deeply personal yet universal exploration of craft’s potential to create shared experiences. Her installations and objects prompt audiences to reconsider the narratives embedded in everyday forms and the roles of craft in contemporary art and life.
